Pattern Completion
Last Updated On: Sun May 31 2026Figures pattern matching is a problem-solving exercise where you are asked to identify, compare, or complete a sequence of shapes or designs. Instead of words or numbers, the questions use visual patterns like:
- Geometric shapes (triangles, circles, squares)
- Rotations or reflections of figures
- Increasing or decreasing complexity in designs
- Symmetry and mirror images
The goal is to test your ability to spot similarities, differences, and logical progressions in visual information.
Figure matching problems come in several forms, each testing a different aspect of visual reasoning. Here are the main types you’ll encounter:
- Pattern Series / Sequence
- Mirror Image Problems
- Water Image Problems
- Embedded Figures
- Figure Completion
- Odd One Out
- Analogy Problems
- Classification Problems
How to approach figure questions
- Study each given figure for its shapes, positions, sizes, shading, and orientation.
- Compare consecutive figures and note exactly what changes: rotation, movement, count, size, or shading.
- Look for a rule that explains every change, and check that it works for all the given figures.
- Apply the rule to find the missing figure, then eliminate options that break it.
- For mirror and water images, remember that a vertical mirror swaps left and right, while a water surface swaps top and bottom.
