A table presents information in labeled rows and columns. Data interpretation questions use tables to compare values, calculate totals, and identify changes or relationships across categories.
How to read a data table
- Read the title, row labels, column headings, and any notes before using the figures.
- Check the units carefully: values may be in thousands, percentages, or another stated measure.
- Locate the relevant row and column, then copy only the figures needed for the question.
Common calculations and comparisons
- Total: add the required values, making sure the categories do not overlap.
- Difference: subtract the smaller value from the larger value.
- Percentage of a total: part / total x 100.
- Percentage change: (new value - old value) / old value x 100.
- Ratio: compare the values in the order asked, then simplify by dividing by their highest common factor.
- Average: sum the relevant values and divide by their count.
A reliable solving method
- Identify exactly what the question asks you to find.
- Mark the relevant rows, columns, and units.
- Choose the correct operation or formula and substitute the data.
- Calculate carefully and check whether the result is reasonable.
- Include the correct unit and distinguish totals from averages.
